10th Congressional Briefs: Dold a 'young gun'

Robert Dold, the Republican running for 10th Congressional District, reached "Young Gun" status, the top level of the three-tired program of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Dold did so by proving his ability to build a winning campaign and achieve substantial fund-raising goals, the committee stated. The program for promising recruits is dedicated to electing conservative candidates to open seats and challenger positions nationwide. As one of 39 "young guns," Dold will be aided with fundraising and infrastructure support and strategic advice.

Kotin's Verdict: BP's move smart one, legally speaking

Although it may appear magnanimous, BP's decision to waive the $75 million damage cap, set up a $20 billion claim fund and accept full responsibility for all damages caused by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, is simply a smart corporate move from political, public relations and legal perspectives.

Financial Regulation: Members approved, 237-192, the conference report on a bill to regulate the financial industry in ways designed to reduce the chances of further U.S. economic meltdowns. A yes vote was to pass a bill (HR 4173) that Republicans criticized as regulatory excess.
